WHY BE CURIOUS?
Curious questioning can play a significant role in fostering healthy and thriving relationships.
When you invite someone to talk through curious questioning, you are opening the doors to communications.
My Story
There was a time when I would find myself unexpectedly triggered in conversations that felt one-sided. I couldn’t quite explain it — I just knew something in me would tighten. Later, as I began talking to others, I realized I wasn’t alone in that experience.
Growing up, I was often told what to do. It was done with love and for my safety, and I understand that now. But as I stepped into adulthood, I noticed how uncomfortable it felt to be directed or corrected without being asked what I thought or felt. Something in me longed to be included — to be considered.
When I picked up How to Know a Person by David Brooks, hoping to improve communication in my relationship, I had a powerful realization: questions are transformative.
Not surface-level questions. Not interrogations. But genuine, curious questions.
Questions that say, I see you. I care about what’s happening inside you.
It was a game changer.
I began to understand that what had triggered me wasn’t control — it was the absence of curiosity. The absence of being invited into the conversation.
And that insight shifted everything. 💛
Here are a few ways Curious Questioning can be beneficial:
1. Building a deeper connection: Asking curious questions shows your genuine interest in your partner's thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It allows you to learn more about each other, encouraging open and meaningful conversations. This deeper understanding strengthens the bond between you and your partner.
2. Enhancing communication: Curious questioning promotes effective communication by encouraging active listening and creating a safe space for sharing. When you ask thoughtful questions, it shows that you value your partner's perspective and are willing to engage in dialogue. This can lead to more open and honest communication, allowing you to address issues, express emotions, and resolve conflicts more effectively.
3. Discovering shared interests: Curiosity about your partner's interests and passions can lead to the discovery of common ground. By asking questions about their hobbies, goals, or dreams, you might uncover shared interests or find new activities you can enjoy together. This shared experience can strengthen your connection and create opportunities for shared growth.
4. Nurturing personal growth: Curious questioning can encourage personal growth within a relationship. By asking your partner about their aspirations, challenges, and desires, you create an environment that supports their self-reflection and growth. This can also inspire you to set personal goals and pursue individual development, leading to a healthier and more fulfilling partnership overall.
5. Preventing assumptions and misunderstandings: Curiosity helps to prevent assumptions and misunderstandings by providing an opportunity for clarification. Instead of assuming you know what your partner thinks or feels, asking questions allows them to express themselves directly. This can minimize misunderstandings, resolve misconceptions, and create a stronger foundation of trust.
Remember, curiosity should be genuine and respectful. It's important to listen actively, be non-judgmental, and create a safe space for your partner, employee or friend to share. By incorporating curious questioning into your relationships, you can deepen your connections, improve communication, and foster stronger bonds.
